Your glimpse of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest

Issue 1
Winter 2007
Welcome to the new electronic news brief from Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest. We hope you will find it interesting and we welcome your suggestions.

Goodwill awarded new contracts

Children of Promise, who have an incarcerated parent, are being matched with adult mentors in the Spokane area, thanks to a grant awarded to Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest by Educational Service District 101. The mentored children range in age from five to 18. National research demonstrates that without intervention these children have a 70% chance of becoming involved in the criminal justice system. For more information about Mentoring Children of Promise call Amanda at (509) 344-0169

Washington’s Office of Community, Trade and Economic Development selected Moses Lake Goodwill to provide new Community Works employment services there and in surrounding communities. Goodwill has been the contract provider of Community Jobs in Grant County since 1999 and now also undertakes providing allied pre-employment services for individuals transitioning from welfare to work.

Moving Forward, funded by the City of Spokane under the Housing and Homeless Assistance Act, will enable Goodwill to help up to 200 people through vocational assessment and paid work experience as they strive toward employment and self-sufficiency.
This grant is the first one awarded to Goodwill specifically to serve this population.
The Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys selected Goodwill to launch a pilot project in Spokane County. Working for Our Children is designed to help individuals being released from prison find a job so they can pay their child support, in some cases subsidized in part by the state to make it feasible for them to meet their obligations and pursue employment.

Washington’s Offender Employment Services (OES) has awarded funds to Goodwill to provide WorkKeys® assessments for more than 300 people being released from correctional institutions in Spokane County. The assessments will help participants with career planning, a key factor in preventing repeat offenses. OES also funds Community Gateway, winner of Goodwill Industries International’s Workplace Skills Award in 2005. For information about WorkKeys for employers’ use call Michelle at (509) 444-4377.

New Moscow-Pullman Goodwill Opens
A contemporary, 16,000-square-foot Goodwill facility recently opened at 201 Warbonnet Drive in Moscow, Idaho. In addition to sleek retail space, the complex includes a drive-through donation drop-off, an area for processing donated goods for re-sale, and offices where Goodwill staff will now be able to provide workforce development and social services to Palouse area residents. The new facility replaces two older and smaller retail stores in Pullman and Moscow. Goodwill operates 12 retail stores in eastern/north central Washington and north/north central Idaho, with 85% of revenues supporting our services.
